1/1/2024 0 Comments Earthling eddie vedderGiven the history many Pearl Jam fans would likely recognize, I think this is a huge step to have him featured and it really made the album stand out. It’s all capped by a fantastic finale “On My Way” with a beautiful yet haunting vocal loop from Edward Severson Jr., Eddie's biological father who died 40 years ago. They are two voices that work really well together. “Picture,” begins with a voice other than Vedder’s, it’s Sir Elton John, in this very upbeat number about having hope. Mills,” that happens to feature the Beatle Ringo Starr on drums & percussion. Then there’s a fun Beatles-inspired track “Mrs. Into a much happier song “Try” that includes some fun harmonica playing by Stevie Wonder and vocals by Eddie’s daughter Olivia. Some other more aggressive tunes are “Good and Evil,” it has driving pulsating rhythms and crunchy guitars, and “Rose of Jericho.” which showcase the heavier side of the band. “Long Way” could be an homage to Tom Petty, “The Haves” a love song which is the slowest song on the album, the token ballad if you will, and the latest single “Brother the Cloud” a song about loss is one of the more aggressive tracks. The three singles to come out before the release date of February 11th fit perfectly within the other songs on the album. All the members have writing credits throughout the album and also play various instruments. The earthlings are: Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums, Josh Klinghoffer on guitar, Glen Hansard on guitar, and producer Andrew Watt on bass. Vedder has an all-star band, appropriately named the earthlings for this release, that he assembled last year. The veteran rocker, front man for the colossal rock band Pearl Jam, brings forth 13 tracks of mid to fast tempo rock songs with enough personal touches to separate it as a solo effort. takeoff.” as he begins “Invincible” the opening song on Earthling, his first solo album in 11 years. Watt’s production is sometimes over-eager, but you can’t get enough of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on drums.“Can you hear.? Are we clear.?” asks rocker Eddie Vedder. Producer Andrew Watt, 31 and a Pearl Jam super-fan, helps his own musical father figure add some worthy deep cuts to a long catalogue. Mills’ – may veer into pastiche, but they work brilliantly because Vedder, 57, is audibly enamoured with his collaborators. If you could, wouldn’t you bring in Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ringo Starr to guest on your record? Their guest spots – on, respectively, the frenetic ‘Try’, instant singalong ‘Picture’ and the poignant ‘Mrs. Dismiss this as uninspired “dad rock”, or embrace it as a dad making the music he’d want to hear. The synth-driven ‘Invincible’ offers an ethereal dose of U2, ‘Long Way’ is a deliberate Tom Petty imitation (featuring Petty’s keyboardist Benmont Tench) and ‘The Dark’ could be a ‘Born in the USA’ B-side. Traversing musical styles, the record’s through-line is its allegiance to fatherhood itself most of these tunes sound less like classic Vedder, and more like the music that raised him. ‘Earthling’, his third solo album and first in 11 years, represents the end of that chase. It’s a tale as old as time, told anew through ‘Alive’, ‘Release’, ‘Better Man’ and more Pearl Jam standards. Vedder was the forsaken son, haunted by the father he never knew. He couldn’t even accept the band’s Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy without deriding the event in 1996. With Pearl Jam, the frontman mourned for the bullied (Jeremy’), seethed with the oppressed (‘W.M.A.’) and defended the abused (‘Daughter’). It’s a cliché to call Eddie Vedder “angsty”, but it made a lot of sense for a long time.
